In this article I will elaborate on the Day of Atonement and why it is so important to observe this most Set-Apart day. I will also explain the significance of the Offering {Sacrifice} of Yahooshua in the context of his Atoning Sacrifice for forgiveness for repented sin. To do this I will first provide some verbatim quotes from the Bible which make clear the original complexity of Atonement and then offer an explanation of how Yahooshua {Yahooshua} provided a simpler way to provide Atonement for sin that is available to every Believer at all times.
The Day of Atonement in Leviticus 23 in the Bible
“26 Yah the Eternally Self-Existing spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Also the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble yourselves [by fasting] and present an offering by fire to Yah the Eternally Self-Existing. 28 You shall not do any work on this same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing your The Almighty. 29 If there is any person who will not humble himself on this same day, he shall be cut off from his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them]. 30 If there is any person who does any work on this same day, I will destroy that person from among his people. 31 You shall do no work at all [on that day]. It is a permanent statute throughout your generations wherever you may be. 32 It is to be to you a Sabbath of complete rest, and you shall humble yourselves. On the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening you shall keep your Sabbath.”” (Amplified Bible)
The Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16 in the Bible
Law of Atonement
“1 Then Yah the Eternally Self-Existing spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who had died when they [irreverently] approached the presence of Yah the Eternally Self-Existing. 2 Yah the Eternally Self-Existing said to Moses,
“Tell Aaron your brother that he must not enter at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil (the Holy of Holies), before the mercy seat which is on the Ark, or he will die, for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. 3 Aaron [as high priest] shall enter the Holy Place in this way: with [the blood of] a young bull as a sin offering and [the blood of] a ram as a burnt offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be belted with the linen sash, and dressed with the linen turban (these are the holy garments). He shall bathe his body in water and put them on. 5 He shall take from the congregation of the Israelites [at their expense] two male goats as a sin offering and one ram as a burnt offering. 6 Then Aaron shall present the bull as the sin offering for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 He shall take the two goats and present them before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting. 8 Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats--one lot for Yah the Eternally Self-Existing, the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 Then Aaron shall bring the goat on which Yah the Eternally Self-Existing’s lot fell and offer it as a sin offering. 10 But the goat on which the lot fell for the scapegoat shall be presented alive before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing to make atonement on it; it shall be sent into the wilderness as the scapegoat.
11 “Aaron shall present the bull as the sin offering for himself and make atonement for himself and for his household (the other priests), and he shall kill the bull as the sin offering for himself. 12 He shall take a censer full of burning coals from the [bronze] altar before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing, and two handfuls of finely ground sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil [into the Most Holy Place], 13 and put the incense on the fire [in the censer] before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing, so that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is on [the Ark of] the Testimony, otherwise he will die. 14 He shall take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the mercy seat; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
15 “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for [the sins of] the people and bring its blood within the veil [into the Most Holy Place] and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. 16 So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place (Holy of Holies) because of the uncleanness and transgressions of the Israelites, for all their sins. He shall also do this for the Tent of Meeting which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness (impurities). 17 There shall be no person in the Tent of Meeting when the high priest goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place [within the veil] until he comes out, so that he may make atonement for himself (his own sins) and for his household and for all the congregation of Israel. 18 Then he shall go out to the altar [of burnt offering in the court] which is before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar on all sides. 19 With his finger he shall sprinkle some of the blood on the altar of burnt offering seven times and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.
20 “When he has finished atoning for the Holy Place and the Tent of Meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the wickedness of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and he shall lay them on the head of the goat [the scapegoat, the sin-bearer], and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is prepared [for the task]. 22 The goat shall carry on itself all their (the Israelites) wickedness, carrying them to a solitary (infertile) land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.
23 “Then Aaron shall come into the Tent of Meeting and take off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the Holy Place (Holy of Holies), and shall leave them there. 24 He shall bathe his body with water in a holy place and put on his clothes, and come out and offer his burnt offering and that of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And he shall offer up in smoke the fat of the sin offering on the altar. 26 The man who released the goat as the [sin-bearing] scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. 27 The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place (Holy of Holies), shall be taken outside the camp; their skins, their meat, and their waste shall be burned in the fire. 28Then he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body with water, and afterward he may come into the camp.
An Annual Atonement
29 “This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month (nearly October) on the tenth day of the month you shall humble yourselves [by fasting] and not do any work, whether the native-born or the stranger who lives temporarily among you; 30 for it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before Yah the Eternally Self-Existing. 31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves; it is a permanent statute. 32 So the priest who is anointed and ordained to serve and minister as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement: he shall wear the holy linen garments, 33 and make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the Tent of Meeting, and for the altar [of burnt offering in the court]. He shall also make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 This shall be a permanent statute for you, so that atonement may be made for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year.” So he did just as Yah the Eternally Self-Existing had commanded Moses.” (Amplified Bible)
Footnotes:
The high priest was permitted to enter the Most Holy Place only once a year. The Day of Atonement was the most sacred of all the festivals and the prescribed purpose of this inclusive sacrifice was to atone for the sins of both the nation and the individual believer, and in this way reconcile The Almighty’s chosen people to Himself. Only by carefully following all of The Almighty’s instructions, could the high priest enter The Almighty’s presence and live.
The Hebrew word rendered “bathe” repeatedly above relates to “immersion in a Mikvah (a body of clean water)” in other words “Baptise”.
Romans 3 in the Bible
All the World Guilty
“1 Then what is the advantage of the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of The Almighty [His very words]. 3 What then? If some did not believe or were unfaithful [to The Almighty], their lack of belief will not nullify and make invalid the faithfulness of The Almighty and His word, will it? 4 Certainly not! Let The Almighty be found true [as He will be], though every person be found a liar, just as it is written [in Scripture],
“THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS,
AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED [by sinful men].” 5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of The Almighty, what shall we say? The Almighty is not wrong to inflict His wrath [on us], is He? (I am speaking in purely human terms.) 6 Certainly not! For otherwise, how will The Almighty judge the world? 7 But [as you might say] if through my lie The Almighty’s truth was magnified and abounded to His glory, why am I still being judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say, (as some slanderously report and claim that we teach) “Let us do evil so that good may come of it”? Their condemnation [by The Almighty] is just.
9 Well then, are we [Jews] better off than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks (Gentiles) are under the control of sin and subject to its power. 10 As it is written and forever remains written,
“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS [none that meets The Almighty’s standard], NOT EVEN ONE.
11 “THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR THE ALMIGHTY.
12 “ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, NO, NOT ONE.”
13 “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE;
THEY [habitually] DECEIVE WITH THEIR TONGUES.”
“THE VENOM OF ASPS IS BENEATH THEIR LIPS.”
14 “THEIR MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS.”
15 “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
17 AND THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN THE PATH OF PEACE.”
18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF THE ALMIGHTY [and His awesome power] BEFORE THEIR EYES.”
19 Now we know that whatever the Law [of Moses] says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that [the excuses of] every mouth may be silenced [from protesting] and that all the world may be held accountable to The Almighty [and subject to His judgment]. 20 For no person will be justified [freed of guilt and declared righteous] in His sight by [trying to do] the works of the Law. For through the Law we become conscious of sin [and the recognition of sin directs us toward repentance, but provides no remedy for sin].
Justification by Faith
21 But now the righteousness of The Almighty has been clearly revealed [independently and completely] apart from the Law, though it is [actually] confirmed by the Law and the [words and writings of the] Prophets. 22 This righteousness of The Almighty comes through faith in Yahooshua the Anointed of Yah for all those [Jew or Gentile] who believe [and trust in Him and acknowledge Him as The Almighty’s Son]. There is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and continually fall short of the glory of The Almighty, 24 and are being justified [declared free of the guilt of sin, made acceptable to The Almighty, and granted eternal life] as a gift by His [precious, undeserved] grace, through the redemption [the payment for our sin] which is [provided] in The Anointed one Yahooshua, 25 whom The Almighty displayed publicly [before the eyes of the world] as a [life-giving] sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation (propitiation) by His blood [to be received] through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness [which demands punishment for sin], because in His forbearance [His deliberate restraint] He passed over the sins previously committed [before Yahooshua’ crucifixion]. 26 It was to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the One who justifies those who have faith in Yahooshua [and rely confidently on Him as Savior].
27 Then what becomes of [our] boasting? It is excluded [entirely ruled out, banished]. On what principle? On [the principle of good] works? No, but on the principle of faith. 28 For we maintain that an individual is justified by faith distinctly apart from works of the Law [the observance of which has nothing to do with justification, that is, being declared free of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to The Almighty]. 29 Or is The Almighty the The Almighty of Jews only? Is He not also the The Almighty of Gentiles [who were not given the Law]? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed it is one [and the same] The Almighty who will justify the circumcised by faith [which began with Abraham] and the uncircumcised through [their newly acquired] faith.
31 Do we then nullify the Law by this faith [making the Law of no effect, overthrowing it]? Certainly not! On the contrary, we confirm and establish and uphold the Law [since it convicts us all of sin, pointing to the need for salvation].”” (Amplified Bible)
The Offering {Sacrifice} of Yahooshua {Yahooshua}
Consideration of the passages from Leviticus highlight a critical point – there is NO Temple, NO Ark of the Covenant and NO High Priest. Therefore the rites prescribed above are null and void.
In fact they have been null and void since the Ark of the Covenant was hidden by YirmYahoo {Jeremiah} in about 586 BC just before the Babylonians invaded Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple.
The Ark of the Covenant was hidden in a cave under Jerusalem until it was discovered by Ron Wyatt in 1982. Thus the priesthood and Temple at the time of Yahooshua were illegitimate and powerless. They could NOT atone for sin or perform any of the other rituals that required an ordained High Priest and the Ark of the Covenant. Their whole spiritual rule was a sham and a fraud, they had NO legitimate authority.
Thus, at the time that Yahooshua lived and died there was NO legitimate manner to receive forgiveness for sin!
Yahooshua turned this around and provided a simple way for those who believed in him and his Offering {Sacrifice} to receive forgiveness.

The key points:
- Yahooshua lived a life free of sin thereby making it possible for him to be an offering without spot or blemish.
- Yahoochanan {John} the Immerser {Baptist} declared Yahooshua “The Lamb of Yah” thereby making it possible for him to be a lamb without spot or blemish and fulfill the requirements set out above.
- The High Priest laid hands on Yahooshua thereby transferring the sins of the people to Yahooshua.
- Yahooshua was taken outside the City, thereby providing the Scape Goat.
- The people declared “his blood be upon us and upon our children” thereby fulfilling the requirement for the sprinkling of the blood of the offering on the people.
- Yahooshua’s blood flowed down onto the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant thereby fulfilling the requirement for the blood of the offering to be sprinkled on the Mercy Seat – refer the article cited above regarding the death of Yahooshua.
- On the night that he was betrayed (Pesach, Passover) Yahooshua gave the bread and declared “this is my body” and then the wine and declared “this is my blood” thereby enabling the bread and wine to be a substitute for his actual body and blood – they symbolically represent Yahooshua by Prophetic substitution.
Thus, through his sinless life and death and the manner in which his death symbolically and prophetically fulfilled the above passages in Leviticus, Yahooshua provided a mechanism whereby ANY person who believes can receive forgiveness for sin at ANY time AND can legally observe the Day of Atonement.
Thus, today, the Day of Atonement directly recognizes the offering of Yahooshua which you should observe by taking the bread and wine and remembering Yahooshua.
The following section provides suggested prayers.
Prayer for the Day of Atonement
On the Day of Atonement pray along the following lines:
“Father Yah, I recall that on the night that he was betrayed Yahooshua took the bread and broke it and gave it to those who followed him and said ‘this is my body given for you, do this as often as you eat it in remembrance of me’ I ask that as I / we partake of this bread that we partake of all that it represents to you, help us to walk in the fullness of the Covenant.”
Then “Father, I recall that Yahooshua then took the cup and said ‘this is my blood, shed for you and for many for forgiveness of sin, do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me’ I ask that as I / we partake of this cup that we partake of all that it represents to you, help us to walk in the fullness of the Covenant. I ask you to forgive me all that I have done and said that I should not have done or said and all the things that I have not done or said and to bring to my remembrance all unrepented sins that I need to confess and repent of. Specifically I confess that I have … (list ALL sins that come to mind), I confess this as sin, I repent and I ask you to forgive me. I thank you that through the offering of Yahooshua I receive forgiveness”.
On the Day of Atonement you can also pray “Father, I ask you to help me to fully comply with the requirements of the Day of Atonement and I thank you that as Yahooshua is my High Priest I am fully forgiven and fully justified by Emunah {Faith}.”
This can be done by ANY Believer, ANYWHERE, ANY TIME – all you need is a piece of bread, preferably unleavened but if you cannot obtain an unleavened wafer or Jewish Matzos (available on Amazon) you can use ordinary bread and then red wine or red grape juice.
This does NOT require a Priest or other officiant, that is a LIE. It is available to you ANY time you have sinned and want to repent and ESPECIALLY on the Day of Atonement.
Conclusion
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most Set-Apart day of the year and should be strictly observed. The complex and challenging rites prescribed in Leviticus above no longer apply, they have been fulfilled by Yahooshua and forgiveness is available to us at ANY time through the bread and wine of the Covenant of Yahooshua {Communion / The Sacraments / whatever you may have historically called it}.
